Hesperiinae


I'm not sure that this  individual isn't actually helping its proboscis along with its leg.
Butterflies of this ilk were quite common in our garden. They would settle, with wings together, then slowly open them to warm in the sun.
This introduces the superfamily of what we refer to as "Skippers", perhaps the lesser lights of the butterfly world. They constitute the (super)family Hesperiidae (or Hesperioidea), as opposed to the "true" butterflies, the Papilionoidia. They appear to share many of the attributes of both butterflies and moths. The bodies are plump, the antennae pointed but swollen toward the ends, and the wings usually of duller colours and rather moth-like. And some are hard to identify! Steve Woodhall mentions four South African (sub)families in this group: Coeliadinae, Pyrginae, Heteropterinae, and the Hesperiinae.
I don't really know the ID of this butterfly, but let's try to narrow it down: Lepidoptera, Hesperiidae, Hesperiinae. From here possibly a Swift eg Borbo fatuellus?  I'm sure the experts would know.

Acraea natalica





The Natal Acraea. The top picture was of a boldly coloured male from Cumberland, approaching the WSF f. umbrata. The next two pictures were from Bisley NR, a male and a female keeping each other company. The first a male DSF f. albiventris, the next a female.The males of this group of acraeas can be distinguished from the females in having an orange posterior abdomen. At the bottom is the underside of a female found in the KZN-NBG.
Its status has remained unchanged since its original description: A.natalica Boisduval 1847.
The food plants, as in many of our acraeas, include the Passifloraceae (Granadilla family.)

Colotis auxo


A male Sulphur Orange-tip at Bisley, perched on the flowers of a Kalanchoe (I think rotundifolia.) The texture of the wings suggests a recent emergence.
 

Leptomyrina: the genus

I have inserted a Tailed Black-eye before the Common. It seemed to be more keeping with the theme. The genus was established by Butler 1898, TS L. phidias (a Madagascar butterfly.) The food plants seem common to the Crassulaceae. Cotyledon orbiculata and Crassula multicava are often found in our gardens here, and Kalanchoe rotundifolia in the wild.

From our location, almost certainly the Common Black-eye. The allysum growing in our garden was often a source of nectar for butterflies. An additional attraction for this butterfly were the food plants we also had in the garden: Cotyledon orbiculata, Crassula multicava, as well as a Kalanchoe. In the next post I have put a picture of a butterfly perched on the latter.
 

Leptomyrina hirundo



The Tailed Black-eye, the same genus as the Common Black-eye, with which it shares food plant (Crassula, Cotyledon, and Kalanchoe.) I have only found this butterfly at Bisley NR, always at the forest edge, and usually close to the food plant K. rotundifolia

Acacia


The Acacias have cropped up in previous posts, and will again, being the food plant of many butterflies, and used by all sorts of insects, browsers and even us humans for stock feed and fuel. With the recent splitting of the genus, an emotionally charged debate has developed. Africa is in very real danger of losing its iconic genus name Acacia to the Australian wattles. It seems Australia is pleading numbers and Africa taxonomic priority. I thought the latter prevails in taxonomic tradition. I can't really see myself referring to Africa's "Senegalia savannahs."
I am not quite sure of the sp. in this picture, it is probably A. Karroo. In Januaries our hillsides are sometimes yellow with these blossom. The grasshopper is an incidental feeder.
